JOB PURPOSE: The Peer Specialist role involves using lived experience to provide empathetic support and guidance to individuals navigating mental health challenges. The Peer Specialist will foster hope, model recovery, and promote wellness through one-on-one interactions and group facilitation. Responsibilities include helping clients set goals, access resources, and build coping strategies in a supportive environment. Must demonstrate strong communication skills, emotional resilience, and a commitment to recovery-oriented care. Certification in peer support and prior experience in behavioral health settings are preferred. The Peer Specialist will work collaboratively with clinicians and contribute to a trauma-informed, person-centered approach. Work is performed under the supervision of the Program Facilitator - Peer Specialist Supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Graduation from and accredited high school or GED. Requires an adult who has been diagnosed with a mental illness and has received at least one cumulative year of mental health services for a disorder that is treated in the target population for Texas (Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, or Major Depressive Disorder). Prefer experience in advocating for themselves or others.
